GREGORY (Gregory) Wayne Gregory made his first backpack, a wooden frame pack, as part of a Boy Scout project when he was 14 years old. His packs were so perfect that Andy Drollinger, the owner of Adventure 16, recognized his passion and talent for manufacturing, and invited Wayne to become Adventure 16's second employee, working at the store for several years. At the age of 22, he and his wife Susie founded Sunbird, a backpack company, with the aim of producing external frame packs with unprecedented design and functionality. However, in 1973, he disbanded Sunbird and began working as a freelance designer, working on sleeping bags, tents, technical wear, etc. He created a variety of gear for numerous outdoor manufacturers, further improving his skills, knowledge, and experience. Feeling the limits of external frame packs, the new trend of seeking unprecedented packs spurred his passion for pack design once again. “What I want to make is backpacks,” I reaffirmed my passion and decided to start a company specializing in backpacks again.
In 1977, he founded Gregory Mountain Products in San Diego. For the next 30 years, we will expand our activities with both our head office and production base located in Southern California. At first, his daily routine was to make packs in the back of the store, and then meet customers in front of the store and talk to them about technical topics. Based on feedback from mountain guides and general customers, we incorporated new ideas into product creation. Wayne believed that fitting was the most important thing in the backpack business. Gregory's innovative ideas, ergonomic design, and commitment to the highest quality... That passion has never faded and is reflected in the latest pack developments to this day. We constantly pursue comfort, fit, durability, and functionality, and continue to evolve and surprise everyone who carries them.
