Verdi: La Forza del Destino, Kaufmann, Harteros, Tézier, Asher Fisch, Bavarian State Opera. From March to July 2016, Sony Classical will release a series of new opera videos starring Jonas Kaufmann. The first of these is a new production of Verdi's opera La Forza del Destino, presented at the Bavarian State Opera in December 2013. Verdi's opera La Forza del Destino premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1862, with a revised version premiering at La Scala in Milan in 1869. This new production at the Bavarian State Opera, created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Verdi's birth, combines the Wölfl version. The production, directed by Martin Kuszej, a talented Austrian director with a track record of directing at venues such as the Burgtheater, vividly revives Verdi's somewhat archaic opera for the modern era with contemporary costumes and settings. The singers are Anja Harteros, a soprano known for her beautiful stage presence and powerful singing voice, and Jonas Kaufmann, a tenor with unwavering global popularity, making this a "dream combination" that has been much talked about. It contributed greatly to the anniversary year of the opera. It was highly praised, with comments such as "Kaufman and Harteros are both at their finest in the lead roles" (The Times) and "It's hard to imagine a more brilliant, grand operatic performance" (Die Welt). Conductor Asher Fisch brilliantly brings together the worlds of these two performers. The production includes modern, partly extreme murder scenes, but the highly concentrated staging, reminiscent of a suspense drama, highlights the seriousness of the work. (SONY)
